How to Support Your Spring Detox
by Jacqueline May Conte, CNP
Spring is kicking into high gear and if you’re still unsure of whether you need to detox, be sure to watch my Faceboook Live from last week here. Assuming you’re ready and in need of a little detoxing, let’s dive a little deeper and talk about where to focus your efforts.
Which Part of Your Body Needs a Detox?
A good hard look at your physical symptoms will help you uncover which part of your body isn’t functioning at its best. For example, if you’re experiencing acne or skin irritations, like rashes or dry patches, you may want to assess your diet and whether you’ve been eating anything in excess, particularly dairy, wheat and sugar, or anything you’re particularly sensitive to and cut it out. Then look at ways to help your skin better detoxify by opening up your pores and drawing toxins from the body, such as dry skin brushing and infrared saunas.
The point is to figure out which channel of elimination or organ of detoxification is blocked, give it a break, and support it with food, herbs, rest and relaxation to allow it to flush out and come back to life. It can be really hard to trace your symptoms back to their root. I would suggest working with a professional who can uncover the connection for you.
Which Aspects of Your Life Need a Detox?
Do you need to pull back on technology, spending time with others or exercising at a high intensity? Maybe you need to leave the city and its sounds, smells and triggers behind. If you’re feeling highly sensitive emotionally or mentally to day-to-day life, take time away from your normal environment, lifestyle, and habits. Shift your focus, change your surroundings and when you’re ready, assess where you can make adaptations to your routine to make things easier and less stressful, preventing overload in the future. The goal is to set boundaries so you have enough time each day to rest and recharge without being distracted.
This happened to me recently. I was feeling overwhelmed by the amount of things on my plate, so I took a full day to recover and reset in order to regain my focus. I spent my day volunteering with an urban farming company, and my night cooking, baking and going through all my stuff to declutter. Talk about spring cleaning! It really helped me reset my priorities and clear my head of unproductive thoughts.
Does Your Overall Perspective Need a Detox?
How do you feel about your life? Are you in love with it or are you frustrated with the way things are going? When your negative thoughts outweigh the positive ones, it’s time to assess your life and move toward a new perspective. Sometimes this means kicking things out of your life that are weighing you down, or finally starting to live for you and not as much for others. Give time to discover what’s really important to you and make it your priority.
