Every “Body” is Unique: 3 Body Conscious Concerns Addressed by a Massage Therapist
by Dae Backus, RMT
I have been a Registered Massage Therapist since 2005. In that time I have worked with hundreds (maybe thousands?) of people.
I have noticed that people tend to bring up one or more of the same 3 concerns at some point and usually it is related to feeling self-conscious about their body.
Below I try to address 3 comments I regularly hear in treatment:
“Sorry my feet are so gross.”
Feet aren’t gross. If you’ve just been stomping barefoot in mud, a little TLC would be appreciated by your RMT, but you don’t need to apologize for your feet. If you have athlete’s foot, or have open wounds (deep heel cracks or serious blisters) let your RMT know and we can take precautions to not spread infection or cause you pain. Good foot hygiene is important for your health but being overdue for your pedi, hairy toes, or calluses from living your life? Not a problem. Please don’t be self-conscious.
“Sorry I have acne on my back.”
We honestly don’t mind. Severe body acne can be a symptom of an underlying medical condition, but we can work around breakouts and it’s not a problem. Depending on the severity we might avoid the area to prevent it getting worse. We might also suggest seeing one of our awesome naturopathic doctors in case is it related to a medical condition, but there is no need to apologize or be self-conscious.
“Sorry I didn’t shave today.”
Trust me, neither did I! Please don’t apologize for having hair on your body. Stubble is not an issue, neither is being covered in hair. If you are very hairy and massage is uncomfortable, please tell us. Your RMT can adjust our technique so we don’t cause discomfort. Please don’t feel you need to groom for us, this includes coming with unwashed hair, or straight from work. Your RMT appreciates cleanliness, but beyond basic good hygiene, please come as you are!
RMTs appreciate that each and every “body” is different and unique. We want to help you reach your health goals, so please come see us no matter what your body looks like!
And yes, to answer the next most common questions…..sometimes people do fall asleep and snore and sometimes they pass gas. We don’t get offended by that either.
